Seafood

There are a variety of seafood markets in Puerto Penasco. Many of these markets are near the "Old Port", also known as "El Malecon".

Mister Fish

Just outside the busy "tourist area", there's a small fish market on the corner. I stopped in here to buy some fish and scallops and the owner was very polite and friendly.

Here were the prices in April 2023.

Red Snapper - $3/pound
Flounder - $3/pound
Large shrimp - $8/pound
Medium shrimp - $6/pound
Scallops - $8/pound
Clams - $8 for 3 kg
Oysters - $8 for 12
Octopus - $20 for 1 kg

Jose's Fish Market

One of the more well-known fish markets is Jose's which is right at the Old Port.

Here's what I've paid in the past for seafood, probably 2020 or 2021. Prices may be higher now.

Red Snapper - 6 pounds @ $3/pound = $18
Large shrimp - 6 pounds @ $5/pound = $30
Scallops - 6 pounds @ $6/pound = $36

The total came to $84, but the owner said he would take $80.

That's 18 pounds of seafood for $80 = $4.44 per pound overall!

How Much Fish You Can Bring Back From Mexico To USA

Are there restrictions for importing seafood (lobster, shrimp, fish, caviar, etc.) for personal use?

The importation of seafood is governed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). Personal quantities of seafood not intended for commercial consumption are not subject to approval by the FDA. Most personal quantities of seafood are admissible, with the exception of endangered species which are subject to restrictions by the FWS.

For instance, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has been authorized by FWS to allow travelers to bring in only 125 grams of caviar. If the traveler has more than that quantity, the goods will be subject to seizure.

Please contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at 1-800-358-2104 and U.S. Food and Drug Administration at 1-888-463-6332 to ensure that the seafood you intend to import is not subject to any restrictions.

Is there a weight limit on the amount of food I can bring back or import?

Personal and commercial imports of food are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). These agencies may have some limitations on certain imports of foods.

*Personal use imports are not subject to quota. However, personal use imports construed as commercial may require a commercial entry because of the quantity. For example, quantity cannot exceed a total weight of 50 lbs (22.7 kg) for meat or poultry, 30 lbs for liquid eggs, 50 pounds of dried eggs, and 30 dozen shell eggs. Ultimately, the CBP officer at the port will determine whether the amount is eligible for use for personal consumption.
